Azores (CU)

When I was asked to join Ulf DL5AXX and Frank DL8WAA on their trip to the Azores for the ARRL International DX Contest CW, I didn't know what to expected. This was my first trip to travel really light. When we met before heading to the airport, my personal belongings were downsized to a small plastic bag ("do you want to smell like a girl or like a man?"). Yes, we had a lot of equipment with us. We even send some antennas to the Azores in advance. For this trip we were accompanied by Frank's YL Ute.

Our location was on the north side of Faial near the village of Cedros. With a perfect take-off to North America. Needless to say that working West Coast from there was an easy one on all bands. Without flittering signals. Besides the contest, we made some 3,900 QSOs in CW, mostly on WARC bands.

This trip was also a culinary highlight for me. The look of the check-in personal was priceless on the morning we left the island, after the dinner the last night, when we had Chili con Carne, when we substituted the red beans by cloves of garlic.
